Julie Hoffmann Recharge

The Recharge | Unleashing Your Inner Good

During one of her spring breaks from Vanderbilt, she participated in a local work experience with her Women’s Studies group, helping build a home for former female prisoners. That experience changed her life.

Understanding the need for service, knowing the needs of your community, and having a social impact are lessons Julie Hoffmann learned at a young age.

Realizing that not everyone has the same life or opportunities, she learned to look at others with a better understanding. It also led her into a life of service. Following college, she joined the Peace Corps before attending business school. She spent the next 20 years as a philanthropic and strategic leader, leveraging nonprofit-centered philanthropy and smart business principles.

Julie served as CEO of New Coast Foundation, a nonprofit venture philanthropy fund, where she worked to maximize the impact of philanthropic investments on root causes of poverty in Chicago. She was a founding Managing Director and Head of Advancement of A Better Chicago, a nonprofit venture philanthropy fund that provides funding and management support to a portfolio of high-performing education nonprofits. All of this led to the advent of JH Philanthropy. She now helps philanthropists, entrepreneurs, and business leaders identify and execute their philanthropic priorities and encourages philanthropists to be nonprofit-centered.

“ I think that everybody needs time, either before or after college, to do something that is for their community, feel closer tied to their country, their community. I think that whether it’s service or giving back in some other way.” – Julie Hoffmann
